Sternquist Garage and Tire celebrates 100 years

Sternquist Garage and Tire, located at 1823 W. 3rd St., Boone, is celebrating a century of service in 2020, as owner Don Elsberry continues a tradition of offering great customer service and getting the job done right.

The comprehensive auto repair and maintenance shop offers free estimates and everything from oil changes, tire repair and changes and tuneups to maintenance services for breaks, air conditioners, carburetors, clutches, mufflers, shocks, suspension, electrical system repairs, computer diagnostics and much more.

“We treat everybody right, never leave a car unfixed and always make sure to keep the customer involved in the cost. We fix the car right the first time,” Elsberry said.

The shop is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and according to Elsberry, the first order of business each day is brewing a fresh pot of coffee.

“I have older folks who come down to drink coffee, talk and have a good time: talk might be about politics, sports, or just what’s happening in Boone, Iowa...” Elsberry said. “Customers come for coffee or to get their oil changed from 8-9 a.m. After 9 a.m., the phone rings off the wall. I give estimates, keep employees busy, order parts, and give more estimates until about 6 at night.”

He spends as much time as he can working on cars in the shop alongside his three employees. “If I had my way, I’d be out there all the time,” Elsberry said. “But I have to make sure our customers are taken care of.”
