Haub and Munson punch tickets to state wrestling

Top two placings at a Class 1A district meet earned the Ogden tandem of Blake Haub and Kale Munson berths to the state wrestling tournament here Saturday.

Haub, a senior, captured a district title at 220-pounds with an impressive performance, posting two quick pins.

Munson’s fantastic freshman campaign continued with a district runner-up placing at 113-pounds.

The third-ranked Haub (36-3) spent a combined 1:01 on the mat, bettering the 65-seconds he wrestled in two matches at sectionals. Haub first flattened Mount Ayr’s Donovan Morales in 20-seconds and then in the finals, pinned Sam Vonnahme of Interstate 35 in 41-seconds. The championship match win was Haub’s 100th career victory.

Munson (31-7) split a pair of major decisions for second. He defeated Jarrett Webb of Mount Ayr, 14-2 in the semi-finals and then was beaten 13-3 by Interstate 35’s Ryan Steinlage in the championship match.

“We are pleased with the team’s performance,” stated Ogden coach Jesse Sundell. “We are able to get two wrestlers to punch their tickets into the state tournament. Blake looked good, pinned his way through and was able to pick up his 100th win in the district finals. Kale took care of business in his first match to put himself in the finals. He didn’t look like himself in the championship match. We have a few thing to work on before this week. Still a great accomplishment qualifying as a freshman and will be ready to make some noise down at state.”
