The history of E.L.M. Street Preschool

E.L.M. Street Preschool began with a church committee, a need for a faith-based preschool, and an available facility at Zion Lutheran Church in the year 1999. After researching other Christian preschools in our area, the committee determined it was a feasible opportunity and proceeded to present the idea to Zion’s congregation. The congregation then approved moving forward with this project.

Members of Zion were excited to be able to provide the children in the community a Christian foundation, kindergarten readiness skills, and strong peer relationships prior to beginning school.

Suggestions for the name of our preschool were submitted by church members. Submitted by Deanne Donelson, E.L.M. (Educating Little Miracles), was the perfect name for our preschool. We are located on Elm Street and wanted a student (God’s Little Miracles) centered learning facility.

Inspections by the state fire marshal were done and necessary changes were made to bring the building up to code for preschool. We worked with DHS (Department of Human Service) guidelines to provide a safe learning environment as well as ensuring quality educational requirements. Several fundraisers and generous donations provided start up fees, enabled us to equip the classroom, and hire our first teacher and associate.

September 17, 2000 was declared E.L.M. Street Preschool Sunday at Zion. We had received our license and welcomed 39 “Little Miracles” to our 1st year of preschool. The first year, preschool sessions were held twice a week for the 3 and 4-year-olds and three times a week for the 4 and 5-year-olds.
