What's hidden in plain sight may surprise you

A mother walks into her young teenage son’s room, bends and scoops up a shirt and sock from the floor. She shakes her head at the scrunched bedspread, more off the bed than on. When she attempts to straighten the bedding a CD case drops to the floor and pops open. But there is no CD inside. She sees what appears to be a scale. She was shocked to learn the small device is often used to weigh drugs. What other items of concern would she uncover?

“Not all kids will use drugs, but knowledge about drugs and drug culture is a tool to help you be aware in case red flags arise - for your child or friend of a child,” says Diane Hinderaker of Boone County Community Services. “Early intervention is best to avoid long term consequences.”

Hinderaker coordinated with Boone County SAFE (Substance Abuse Free Environment) Coalition, to host “In Plain Sight” last Tuesday and Thursday at both the Middle School and High School. The mock room display is an interactive demonstration for parents/guardians that addresses substance use in today’s young adult culture.
