Volleyball team opens with win over Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center

The Ogden High School volleyball team is trying to turn the tide and accomplish something very few teams have done in Ogden’s volleyball history, have a winning record.

That would be a big jump for the Bulldog from last year, as they ended up with an 8-20 record, but head coach Ranee Carter believes that it is very possible to accomplish.

“Yeah last year’s record isn’t very pretty. But we only lost one starter from last year, we have a lot of seniors and juniors on the team so we are very experienced,” Carter said. “We are not lacking for talent either. Our biggest thing is playing to our best level. If we play to the best we can play with anyone, but if we play very poorly we can also be beat by anyone. We need to stay focused and put our best game out there.”

The volleyball team has multiple goals for this season, especially individually. Carter said they all want to improve on their hitting efficiency, hit 90% serving efficiency, and be better with the free ball. So far Carter has seen improvements in all of those categories even if they aren’t completely there yet.

“Last year the girls would have three or four kills, but also three or four errors. Now we have greatly improved on that but we want to continue to work on that,” Carter said.

The volleyball team has a roster full of talent and they also have a very good junior varsity team.

“All the JV starters are pushing the varsity players. Everyone continues to improve constantly. The players have to continue to work and improve to keep their spots.” Carter said.

The volleyball team has a lot of work ahead of them in a challenging conference, but Carter thinks that the girls can compete and perhaps make a bit of noise.

“The team needs to keep becoming closer. If someone makes a mistake out there, they forgive each other for it, they still love their teammates despite the mistake, and are still happy to be there, then we will be a very good team this year.”
