A special time for fathers and daughters

I walked in the door and bypassed the check-in table. Apparently moms/grandmas were not allowed, and one unknowing host was almost ready to have me barred. That is until she was informed I was with the newspaper and not trying to crash the dance. When I heard that Ogden Girl Scout Troop 2018 was hosting a Father/Daughter dance for kindergarten through fourth graders, I knew it was a great photo opportunity - daddy’s and their adorable little girls. The event did not disappoint.

“Precious” is how I would describe the scene. Daddy’s (some grandfathers, too) proudly escorting their evening’s date to the dance floor under dimmed lights. The young ladies, dressed in their finest, ringlets of hair locked in place with an abundance of hair spray, and corsages adorning some wrists. Just like at a high school prom.

I could close my eyes and imagine years from now, the same scene, except dad now looking into his daughter’s eyes  during the father/daughter wedding dance. It’s scary to think how soon that time will come.

Enjoy it now fathers, I whispered to myself, with a past song by Harry Belafonte resonating in my head: “Turn around and you’re two, turn around and you’re four, turn around and you’re a young girl goin’ out of the door.”

The dance was held Saturday, April 28 at the Leonard Good Community Center. A photographer was set up for formal photos.

“I was really impressed with our DJ, they did a great job,” said Scout leader Tia Stoneburner. “She would call the dads up to dance, then let them have a little down time while the girls hit the floor on their own. “Our goal is to increase the number of (Scouting) events here in Ogden.”

The dance was so popular, nearly 70 young girls attended. They are already looking at another one next year, but may consider moving it to February.
