Services set for Joe J. Smith

Joe J. Smith, 78, of Ogden, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, June 29, 2014, at the Boone County Hospital. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 3, 2014, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ogden.  Father James Bruch will officiate.  Visitation will be Wednesday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at St. John’s Catholic Church. Joe Junior Smith was born on October 25, 1935, in Luther, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Nancy (Steen) Smith.  He graduated with the Boone High School class of 1954.

On June 18, 1954, Joe was united in marriage to Andrea Dorman, at the Sacred Heart Rectory in Boone.

Joe worked as an over the road truck driver for Allied Van Lines and later owned and operated the Texaco Station and Joe Smith Tree Service in Boone during the height of the Dutch Elm disease outbreak.  He went on to work for 12 years with Iowa Road Builders out of Ames before starting Boone County Radiator Shop in Boone, later moving it to Ogden where he worked until he retired.

Joe was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Ogden. He formerly belonged to the Boone Moose Lodge #104, and the Sportsman’s Club. He loved watching Westerns on TV and was a big John Wayne fan. 

Joe was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, camping, and taking the family motor home on elk hunting excursions. Family was the most important thing in Joe’s life and in his child raising years he enjoyed making quirky and inexpensive entertainment for his children. Some of these inventions have been passed on and are enjoyed by both grandchildren and great grandchildren today.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Andrea Smith of Ogden, Iowa; eight children, Barbara (Kris) Henning of Ogden, Iowa, Cyndi (Dan) Brogden of Boone, Iowa, Deb (John) Forth of Ames, Iowa, Elyse (Digby) Worgan of Ogden, Iowa, Felicia (Kirk) Miller of Akron, Iowa, Gail (Matt) Hilsabeck of Boone, Iowa, Joe D. (Kirsten) Smith of Ogden, Iowa, and Heather (Bryan) Thiel of Roland, Iowa; 19 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and 9 step great grandchildren; one sister, Betty Mae (Ike) Johnson of Breta, Iowa; two brothers, Bill (Betty) Smith of Webster City, Iowa, and Richard (Deb) Smith of Kearney, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step mother, Bertha Semmler, step grandson, Tracy Brogden, and one brother, Charles Smith.

       Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
