A preview of Ogden basketball and wrestling teams

New coach for girls basketball

The Lady Bulldogs are excited to welcome a new head coach to the team. Coach Ben Van Wyk was the assistant coach last season and is ready to take the helm of the team. He will be assisted by Micah Hales, who is new to the Ogden district.

The Bulldogs are coming off a 10-13 season, in which the team was led by four key seniors. The Bulldogs will be replacing starters Kim Christensen, Kennedy Kruse, Ellee Laws, and Kylie Nichols. Those four players were responsible for over 65% of the scoring last year. Ashton Boggess and Abby Langel are the leading returning scorers from last season’s team.

Boys team returns four starters

Head Coach Dave Morris and assistant coaches Dan Lake and Will Meinecke are preparing their team for a rebound season. The Bulldogs are looking to improve on their 8-16 record from last season.

“One goal we have this season is to go from 8-16 to 16-8,” said Coach Morris.

Every varsity player on this season’s team has previous varsity experience. The Bulldogs lost key seniors Andrew Haberer and last season’s leading scorer Nathan Kennedy. The Bulldogs are returning most of last season’s production.

This season’s team returns four starters: Jade Thompson, Noah Snedden, Ben Heeren, and Kayden Kruse. The coaches know these players will be key contributors to the team. Junior Ben Heeren finished as the conference’s eighth leading scorer and leading rebounder and will look to build off of his impressive sophomore campaign. Seniors Sawyer Wagner and Jacob Hinman, junior Charlie Lake, and sophomore Griffin Diggs will all see more playing time this season.

OHS wrestling: Talented freshmen join experienced upper classmen

Coach Jesse Sundell is entering his 2nd season as head coach of the Ogden wrestling team. New assistant coach Mitchell Broer joins the staff.  This season’s team will add a talented group of underclassman to an already experienced group of upperclassmen.

“We have some very talented freshman this year and we are excited to see them hit the mat and improve throughout the season,” Coach Sundell replied when asked about the incoming wrestlers joining the varsity level this year. These freshmen include Avery McCloud, Denver Hoskins, and Justus Rude. Seniors Taylon Engleen, Garrett Bales, and Parker Stoneburner will lead these freshmen, along with junior Jacob Kathman and sophomore Blake Haub.
