PPEL: What is it and why do we need it?

On September 8, three individuals will be on the ballot as the community goes to the voting box. Incumbents Sally Good and Matt Van Sickle will be seeking re-election. After 17 years of service on the school board, Tom Cleveland will not be seeking re-election. Looking to fill the third seat is Ebon Carter.

Also on the ballot, the Board of Directors will be asking patrons to renew the PPEL fund which has been in place for over ten years. This is not a tax increase, but continues the levy that has traditionally funded repair and maintenance of school district facilities, including technology, buses and equipment.

What is it?

The Physical Plant and Equipment Levy is a fund currently in place which has specific uses. It cannot be used for salaries or instructional supplies. The purposes do include:

• Improvement of property

• Purchase/lease purchase of equipment/ technology exceeding $500 per single unit (includes computers, musical instruments, copiers, projectors, etc.)

• Payment of debt for schools or buildings

• Repair, remodeling and reconstructing of existing facilities

• Expenditures for energy conservation

• Transportation equipment for transporting students (buses)

• Equipment for recreational purposes

• Asbestos Inspection and elimination costs
