Paulson earns medical degree, returns to hometown area

Dr. Benjamin Paulson is returning to our area through his work as an orthopaedic surgeon. He will be one of four orthopaedic surgeons to come to Boone County Hospital monthly starting in September.

Paulson graduated from OHS in 1996. In 2000 he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Washington University. From there he went to Duke University and earned his medical degree in 2004. His five-year internship/residency was at the University of Texas – Houston. That is where he studied general surgery and also where he specialized further through a Kleinert-Kutz hand surgery fellowship.

Paulson found the hand surgery specialty to be what he wanted to pursue because ‘it’s complex, finely detailed and has a good variety of work.’ He’ll help people with broken bones, nerve problems, muscles, tendons, skin and more.

Relating to how growing up in Ogden helped prepare him for his future, Dr. Paulson said his classmates have been high achievers – there’s a civil engineer, a dentist, three doctors in the medical field, some with a masters degree in education, a missionary and more.

“In a small town, a close community, we learn that reputations can be earned quickly and can follow you wherever you go,” Paulson related. “In fact, in my job, it’s much the same as the small community. Working within the medical field, a reputation can also be quickly earned.”

With this question; ‘what may we need to be aware of, as part of a small, rural community, in regards to raising future generations?’ Paulson replied, “Sometimes it’s hard for youth to be aware of what opportunities are out there. It’s important to know much can be accomplished in life when one is willing to work hard.”

Paulson and his wife, Christa, live in Des Moines with their two- year-old daughter, Daphne.

“I’m excited to be back and try to give a little to the community that helped raise me.”
