For the love of teaching . . . and science

“A parent once said to me at conferences, ‘your love for your career must spill over at home since two of your kids have chosen careers in education. I guess maybe that’s true,” said Ogden Middle School science teacher Mona Satre, “as they saw the fun we (the teachers) have at our jobs and outside our jobs in school-related activities.” Satre’s passion for not only teaching, but the field of science as well, has spilled over onto daughter Hallie Edgerly (a 2006 OHS graduate) who currently teaches Physical Science at Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Middle School in Adel. Imagine the pride her mother felt when Hallie was recently recognized by the Iowa Academy of Science with an Excellence in Science Teaching Award (ESTA), one of just eight teachers from across the state recognized in April at the Iowa Academy of Science Annual Meeting at the University of Northern Iowa. Hallie, too was full of pride, not for herself, but for her mother/teacher/mentor who was also one of the 2017 ESTA recipients. Having been a student in her mother’s classes, she’s experienced firsthand teaching techniques that keep youth engaged and help them develop a love and understanding of the world of science.

“As one of mom’s children who followed in her footsteps of being a science teacher, I can say without a doubt she has devoted her career to making science come alive to not only my siblings and myself, but to hundreds of students,” says Hallie.” This lasting impact is her legacy to the science field she cares about so deeply.
