Iowa Secretary of Agriculture visits Ogden

As part of his effort to reach all 99 counties during his first term, Iowa’s Secretery of Acriculture, Mike Naig, paid a visit to Ogden on Thursday, June 20. Hosting a round table discussion at the Lucky Pig, Sec. Naig spoke on some of the common topics affecting the ag community as of late, before taking questions from a room full of locals and agriculture professionals.

A question on everyone’s mind, as he addressed, has been the weather. While most everyone hates to hear the terms “extreme and historic” in regards to what we’ve experienced weather-wise this spring, it is the unfortunate reality. Sec. Naig explained some of the recent efforts the state has made in order to help the agriculture community recover from these weather events, and said that a main piece of the puzzle is re-evaluation.

“We can have someone come in and rebuild a road that washed out exactly the way it was, yes, but why would we want to do that?” Sec. Naig asked the group. “If it didn’t work there the first time, it won’t in the future. We need to make changes where we can to make the outcomes less severe.”
