Gary Dee Houseman

 

Gary Dee Houseman, age 55, of Ogden died Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at his home in Ogden. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Carris Family Funeral Home in Perry. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 22, 2014 from 2 to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Carris Family Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Peoples Cemetery in Rural Woodward. Memorials may be given to the Houseman family and may be left at the Funeral Home. 

Gary was born July 15, 1959 at Dallas County Hospital, Perry, IA, to Lester Dee and Peggy Janet (Nelson) Houseman. He graduated from Central Dallas High School (Minburn, IA) in 1977. Following graduation, he served in the United States Army from 1978 to 1981. Gary also worked at the Woodward Resource Center as a Resident Treatment Worker for 37 years. He was united in marriage to Susan Adams on May 19, 2001 in Ogden. 

Gary enjoyed playing sports of all kinds, particularly softball, basketball, and bowling. You could always find him watching a ball game, and took a special liking to rooting on the Cardinals, Vikings, and the Hawkeyes. He enjoyed the outdoors: hiking, swimming, biking, and BBQ’s – especially the 4th of July. His influential personality drew a crowd, filling the surroundings with fun, laughter, playful banter, and competition. His competitive spirit was drawn out playing darts, pool, and horseshoes. Additionally, he liked traveling, attending concerts to jam to rock-n-roll, and playing scrabble, cribbage, and various card games. What he treasured most was time spent with his kids and grandkids. He was a loving husband, son, father, grandfather, brother, and friend and will be missed dearly by those closest to him. 

Gary was preceded in death by his father, Lester Houseman and grandparents.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Houseman, of Ogden, mother, Peggy Houseman of Gardiner, IA, a daughter, Sammi Jo Houseman, and her husband, Jeff Kost, of Marion, IA, and step children Kristi Anderson of Ogden, and Jake Anderson of Glenwood, IA. Eight grandchildren: Gage, Caleb, Jacob, Jaida, Kylyn, Kynnedi, Taylor and Paxtyn, and one great-grandchild, Kahner. Sisters include: Pam (Kevin) Jacobs, Deb Houseman, and Karen (Bruce) Ireland. In-laws: Pam Martineau, Bill (Carolyn) Shere, Terry (Alicia) Shere, and Shelly (Mark) Nagel. He will also be remembered by a host of cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews, as well as many, many friends.
