Did you know?

The first person to cross America on a motorized vehicle was a man named George A. Wyman, when he rode from San Francisco, California to New York City in the year 1903.

Riding on a 200cc, 1.25 horsepower “California” motorcycle designed by Roy C. Marks of the California Motor Company, Wyman embarked on an epic 50-day transcontinental journey in the mere beginnings of the 20th century.

During his journey Wyman crossed mountain ranges, deserts, vast prairies, and travelled through the industrial heartland of America.

At just 26 years old, Wyman travelled alone with only the things he could carry. He faced many challenges along the way, such as unpaved roads or crossing railroad and wagon tracks, in all weather conditions. His historic journey was made possible through a strong concoction of skill, ingenuity, personal courage, and determination; all of which are traits that define the spirits of long-distance motorcyclists to this day.

On June 14, 1903, during the fourth leg of his journey – a trek from Omaha, Nebraska to Chicago, Illinois - Wyman made a stop in our neck of the woods. In order to fix the ‘final drive’ of his motorcycle, Wyman paid a visit to a local Blacksmith in Ogden, across the street from our current City Hall.
