Continuing with sanitary sewer upgrade

The City of Ogden will soon begin a second phase of their sanitary sewer project. In 2011 a portion of Ogden’s sanitary sewer system underwent rehabilitation that involved relining pipes with a fiberglass stocking (see photo). This year they are targeting portions of the system in southwest Ogden.

“The object is to make a continuous pipe that adds more life to the pipe and stops water from entering the system,” said Sewer Superintendent Chad Thede. According to Thede, problem areas were detected by three different methods: 1) Manhole inspections when high amounts of water are in the sanitary sewer; 2) smoke testing; and 3) a storm water simulation where water is added to the storm sewer. They then check for water entering the system.

The rehabilitation process involves a felt liner saturated in a glue and turned inside out. The contractor inverts the liner into the sewer and adds steam to cure the pipe. “The whole process is done below ground,” said Thede.

Municipal Pipe and Tool Company began cleaning and televising the pipes Monday. By Wednesday they are expected to begin relining pipes.

Streets involved are: SW Fifth and SW Sixth from Mulberry to Division; SW Seventh and SW Seventh Street Place from Oak to Division; SW Eighth from Oak to Mulberry; Mulberry from SW Sixth to SW Fourth; Oak from SW Second to SW Eighth; and NW Second from Locust to Sycamore.
