Church’s pitching effort leads to a league title

The lead paragraph in a Quincy (Illinois) Herald-Whig story described how a former OHS Bulldog standout led his team to a league championship.

“Staked to a one-run lead before he even took the mound, Preston Church tossed eight scoreless innings in leading the Gems to a 3-1 victory over the Chillicothe Paints in the decisive game of their best-of-three Prospect League championship series.”

Church, a 2013 OHS graduate, currently attends Western Illinois University.

This past summer he participated in the Summer Prospect League as a member of the Quincy Gems. The Gems clinched the league title having won 11 of their final 13 games.

“He was brilliant,” Gems manager Chris Martin said of Church. “He had an amazingly pitched game. Most of their hitters were overmatched. He has that in him.”

Church’s performance that night clinched his fourth win of the year, second in the playoffs. He completed the summer season with a 2.73 ERA.

Preston is the son of Scott and Gina Church of Ogden.
