Renewable Energy Group (REG) partners with Boone County High School
Manufacturing Program
Students from the Ogden high school manufacturing class have a better understanding on controlling workplace hazards, and they also have some new personal protective equipment, thanks to Renewable Energy Group (REG), based in Ames.
Joe Korpi, Manager of Safety and Health for Renewable Energy Group, gave an interactive safety presentation to a room full of students on Wednesday morning. He explained the importance of following the hierarchy of hazard controls and wearing personal protective equipment properly.
Using multiple relatable examples, Korpi shared why industry focuses on eliminating hazards whenever possible. When that is not practical, the next choice is to substitute safer practices or equipment. Engineering controls are employed to manage any remaining risk, followed with administrative controls and personal protective equipment.
