Big Kahunas makes a big splash in Boone

The city of Boone welcomed a new business recently, as the ice cream parlor and retro candy store, Big Kahunas, opened their doors on May 15. Owned by Roger and Jane Martin, both Boone locals, the store has been a smashing success over the last six weeks.

In fact, since their grand opening, they have not only had to extend their business hours, but also hire over twice as many people as they originally anticipated.

“We were having so many people coming in after we closed at 7 p.m. that we knew we had to stay open longer to help meet demand,” said Roger.

The store is employed by mostly high school students, and Jane, a former high school teacher, laughs about how the decision to stay open longer was a tough one.

“They need time to do their homework!” she exclaimed.

However once warmer weather hit, the need for longer hours was unavoidable. They were also short staffed, a problem solved by telling their current employees to “bring all their friends,” as Jane puts it.

While Big Kahunas may be just six weeks old in it’s physical form, the idea for the candy shop/ice cream store duet has been swimming around Roger’s mind for over two years.
